Person-Centered Approach

About the Person-Centered Approach

In the field of mental health, the Person-Centered Approach (developed by Carl Rogers) is a humanistic model of psychotherapy based on the premise that the individual is the best expert on their own life. This approach asserts that every human being possesses an innate drive toward self-actualization and positive personal growth.

In person-centered therapy, the focus is not on trying to change or direct the client, nor on providing unsolicited advice. Instead, it aims to create a safe, accepting, and empathetic environment wherein the client can unlock their own inner potential.

Core Principles: Unconditional Acceptance and Empathy

At the heart of the person-centered approach lies the quality of the relationship established between the therapist and the client. For healing and personal growth to occur, the therapist integrates three core conditions into the process:

- Unconditional Positive Regard: The client's feelings, thoughts, and experiences are accepted without judgment, criticism, or preconditions.

- Empathetic Understanding: The therapist strives to perceive the client's inner world through their eyes and reflects this understanding back to them.

- Congruence and Genuineness: Rather than assuming a distant expert role, the therapist remains open, honest, and authentically connected to the process.

Through these conditions, the individual is relieved of the need to be defensive or seek external validation, allowing them to freely explore their emotional processes.

Self-Esteem and Self-Actualization

Conditional regard and expectations experienced from early childhood onward can create a gap between the "ideal self" and the "real self." When individuals suppress their own needs to gain approval from others, internal conflicts, feelings of inadequacy, and anxiety often emerge.

Person-centered therapy supports individuals in rediscovering their true values, boundaries, and needs. Throughout therapy, clients build autonomy and self-worth by taking ownership of their decisions.

The Healing Process

In this approach, the therapist acts not as a director, but as a companion. The therapy space allows the client to shed masks, listen to their inner voice, and experience complete emotional acceptance.

Person-centered therapy can be especially beneficial for individuals who:

- Wish to enhance their self-esteem and sense of personal worth,

- Struggle to express their needs or set healthy boundaries,

- Aim to achieve greater autonomy in decision-making,

- Experience pervasive feelings of inadequacy or disconnect,

- Seek to cultivate personal growth and realize their inner potential.

The person-centered approach guides individuals to find their own compass on their life journey, enabling them to live a more fulfilling and authentic life.
